I believe in Magic. There, I said it. Well okay, so not the kind of Magic where someone makes themselves disappear, or levitates an object (although, the jury’s still out on that one), but rather the Magic that exists in our everyday world. If you’re alive, if you have eyes to see, how could you not believe in a magical, mystical world that is in evidence all around us? When a flower grows from a tiny seed under the soil... when that flower emerges and unfurls in such exquisite detail… when thousands of plants, animals, and insects, all exist in such wildly different forms, colors, features... it IS pure magic, isn’t it? And all of those living, growing things are vibrating with a universal energy... and science will back me on this one. So, what about the energy of inanimate objects? Ah, now there’s a deep (and scientifically proven) subject! Now, stay with me here for just a second and I promise I’ll get back to the Magic... Depending upon how far back in your memory you have to reach (pretty far for me!) you may remember from science class that all matter is made up of atoms. All atoms are made up of protons, neutrons and electrons and it’s all a form of vibrating energy. That’s right. ALL matter carries a vibrational energy. Everything. (If you would like to read further about vibrational energy, there’s a great article in a blog on Scientific American regarding the vibration of inanimate objects. And just in case I’ve really got you thinking about vibrational energy, the aforementioned article is further discussed on Quartz, an on-line business magazine.) So what about the things we create? Do they automatically vibrate with their own inherent energy, or do we transfer our intentions to the object? Maybe both? Maybe something beyond what we can even grasp? Well, here’s where it gets murky and my little science-junkie brain isn’t quite sure, but in any case, it’s still magical in the sense that it carries a known vibration but can’t be definitively explained by everyday people like you and me. For years I’ve been creating amulets and talismans that I believe hold an energy that others connect with, and they wear or use these objects to manifest into being (more energy at work here) something that they desire in their life. Is the object doing this or does the belief create the outcome? Does it matter? If the end result is the same? It’s all vibrational energy.
Throughout my years of creating, I’ve believed my work was all about the symbolism I draw from myth and legend, but as time has gone on, a deeper understanding has emerged. My inspiration (more magical energy... are we seeing a pattern here?) is actually derived from the fact that the myths and legends were created to explain MAGICAL THINGS. I don’t want to put away the wonder and imagination that we possessed in childhood, or that our ancestors employed so that they could have a “practical” way of understanding and explaining the world around them. If the goal of the “School of Life” is to grow up, get serious and let go of magical thinking, then I don’t want to graduate. If it means we have to eschew all of the mysteries around us, how boring and pointless is that? No thank you, I’m holding onto my sense of wonder and keeping my mind open to all the possibilities. So, am I serious about the mystical properties of the things that I create? ... as serious as a heart attack, yes, I am. And if your mind is open to the wonder and possibilities, you’re gonna like it here. Welcome… come on in… pull up a chair by the fire… and join me in some magical thinking...
